In taking the journey of living a cleaner lifestyle, beauty products can be one of the most surprising and confusing categories to change over. For a long time many of us never realized the amount of crazy chemicals we are putting on our skin, in our hair, etc. are also causing harm to our overall health. We assumed that the government and cosmetic companies would be banning harmful chemicals, but that sadly isn't the case. In fact the last major federal law passed on cosmetic safety in the US was 80 years ago. Yikes!
With that being said we have to be willing to do our own research and make choices on what we put on and therefore in to our bodies. After learning about this several years ago, I began transitioning my makeup, skincare, hair and body products, and have had so much fun doing it. There are amazing companies out there that have taken on the need for safe cosmetics and are doing a great job.
Beautycounter stands out in this area, not only because they make amazing, safe cosmetic products, but they are advocates of trying to get the government to change the cosmetic laws. Beautycounter bans over 1500 questionable/harmful ingredients (similar to what the EU bans). In comparison, the US bans only 30 ingredients. I love that they are constantly doing the research, testing and adjusting to keep their products as safe but also high-performing as possible. Approximately 80% of the ingredients used in their products are natural, plant-derived, or certified organic. Besides the safety issue, I really appreciate that Beautycounter's products are high-performing.
The anxiety struggle is real and more of us than we even know are dealing with it. While anxiety is something I've dealt with most of my life, it seems like just now it is starting to get more mainstream to talk about and admit to. I'm so glad that conversations are happening around mental health, giving us the ability to say I struggle with that too and it's okay. It's funny, I have found once I started opening up about my own anxiety, the conversations I've had with friends and strangers about their own experiences have been amazing and impactful. We can open up to each other, be vulnerable and offer support and throw perfection out the window.
I've worked hard on managing my own anxiety the last several years and in turn am passionate about helping others in this area. Many of my clients deal with anxiety and while we can't always "fix" anxiety, we can develop a toolkit to help manage the process and lessen the impact. I work with clients and in my own life on customizing a toolkit that works when you start to feel that anxious feeling come on. Maybe it's centered around work stress, family issues or maybe it's that anxiety where nothing is really wrong, but you still feel worry. Through any of those feelings I've found that if I can identify habits, resources and practices early on, it lessens the impact and helps me get out of the funk.
Is there anything better than a hot mug of something delicious first thing in the morning, especially in these winter months? It seems to add a little bit of joy no matter how early it is and signal to your brain that it is indeed time to get after this new day! I used to be a daily coffee drinker and loved (and still do) the taste and smell. Eventually as I have become a more intuitive eater and worked on managing my anxiety, I noticed that coffee definitely made me feel more anxious. I started looking for a lower caffeine alternative which led to my matcha latte love.
