BeautyCounter Favorites - Spring 2018

BeautyCounter Favorites - Spring 2018

In taking the journey of living a cleaner lifestyle, beauty products can be one of the most surprising and confusing categories to change over. For a long time many of us never realized the amount of crazy chemicals we are putting on our skin, in our hair, etc. are also causing harm to our overall health. We assumed that the government and cosmetic companies would be banning harmful chemicals, but that sadly isn't the case. In fact the last major federal law passed on cosmetic safety in the US was 80 years ago. Yikes!

With that being said we have to be willing to do our own research and make choices on what we put on and therefore in to our bodies. After learning about this several years ago, I began transitioning my makeup, skincare, hair and body products, and have had so much fun doing it. There are amazing companies out there that have taken on the need for safe cosmetics and are doing a great job.

Beautycounter stands out in this area, not only because they make amazing, safe cosmetic products, but they are advocates of trying to get the government to change the cosmetic laws. Beautycounter bans over 1500 questionable/harmful ingredients (similar to what the EU bans). In comparison, the US bans only 30 ingredients. I love that they are constantly doing the research, testing and adjusting to keep their products as safe but also high-performing as possible. Approximately 80% of the ingredients used in their products are natural, plant-derived, or certified organic. Besides the safety issue, I really appreciate that Beautycounter's products are high-performing.

Building Your Anxiety Tool Kit

Building Your Anxiety Tool Kit

The anxiety struggle is real and more of us than we even know are dealing with it. While anxiety is something I've dealt with most of my life, it seems like just now it is starting to get more mainstream to talk about and admit to. I'm so glad that conversations are happening around mental health, giving us the ability to say I struggle with that too and it's okay. It's funny, I have found once I started opening up about my own anxiety, the conversations I've had with friends and strangers about their own experiences have been amazing and impactful. We can open up to each other, be vulnerable and offer support and throw perfection out the window.

I've worked hard on managing my own anxiety the last several years and in turn am passionate about helping others in this area. Many of my clients deal with anxiety and while we can't always "fix" anxiety, we can develop a toolkit to help manage the process and lessen the impact. I work with clients and in my own life on customizing a toolkit that works when you start to feel that anxious feeling come on. Maybe it's centered around work stress, family issues or maybe it's that anxiety where nothing is really wrong, but you still feel worry. Through any of those feelings I've found that if I can identify habits, resources and practices early on, it lessens the impact and helps me get out of the funk.

My Morning Matcha Latte Recipe

My Morning Matcha Latte Recipe

Is there anything better than a hot mug of something delicious first thing in the morning, especially in these winter months? It seems to add a little bit of joy no matter how early it is and signal to your brain that it is indeed time to get after this new day! I used to be a daily coffee drinker and loved (and still do) the taste and smell. Eventually as I have become a more intuitive eater and worked on managing my anxiety, I noticed that coffee definitely made me feel more anxious. I started looking for a lower caffeine alternative which led to my matcha latte love.

Self-Care Gift Guide

Self-Care Gift Guide

How are we only 10 days away from Christmas? Has this season just flown by? If you're like me and still need to finish up your shopping, I put together some of my favorite self-care and wellness gifts. This would be a good one to send over to your husband for some ideas :).

Self-care is essential all year long and especially during this season. We tend to feel guilt about needing to rest and take times for ourselves. Maybe you have to say No to one more holiday party as much as you would love to see everyone. Listen to your body and mind and never feel guilty when you know you need to slow down. You'll be happy you did. More on this topic on my latest Instagram post!

Cozy Morning Oatmeal

Cozy Morning Oatmeal

Once the weather shifts to cool fall mornings, my oatmeal cravings are real! A freezing cold smoothie just doesn't fit the bill. I love oatmeal because it's quick, easy to make, healthy and you can do a lot of different things with it.

Today I'm sharing some of my favorite options for a creamy, delicious and flavorful oatmeal. There is nothing plain or bland about this oatmeal! I love this before going to teach or workout. It fills me up but doesn't feel heavy at all.

Feel free to swap in what you have on hand in your pantry. That's the best part on oatmeal is you can just throw toppings in and use what you already have on hand.

Happy Gut Travel Kit

Happy Gut Travel Kit

We just got back from the most AMAZING trip to Italy. In one word I would describe it as magical. I will definitely be sharing more about the trip itself and where we went. To see pictures you an check out my Instagram.

As a total foodie, I was beyond excited to try all of the Italian cuisine and wine. I knew going in that I wasn't going to hold back and wanted to taste everything. I normally eat low gluten and low dairy (sometimes refraining from them all together), but going into this trip I wanted to be able to indulge in everything and obviously not suffer from a mad gut.

Finding Joy

Finding Joy

Joy is one of my favorite words. Google defines joy as: a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. It's so simple yet has such a huge impact on our own lives and how we impact those around us. When we were kids it was so easy to find joy right? As life got a bit harder (thanks a lot #adulting), it seems that we have to actually work for joy sometimes. Of course there are those times where you take an amazing vacation or are at a concert and joy encompasses you, but what about during the day to day grind?

I've noticed that through times of stress and excessive busyness that I have to work a bit harder to find joy. I want to find joy for not only the great feeling it brings to me but to also bring light to others. In the tough world we live in, don't you appreciate being around people who are joyful? I sure do. Those people fill my bucket.

Avocado, Arugula & Chive Toast

Avocado, Arugula & Chive Toast

I had finished an early morning of teaching barre and taking a HIIT class earlier this week and was pretty excited for a nourishing breakfast (I just had some fruit before classes). Right away my head went to avocado toast which was pretty random because I haven't made that in awhile. It's a quick, easy breakfast, lunch or snack that I'm ready to get it back into my routine! Especially as the weather cools down, a cold smoothie doesn't always hit the spot.

Below is a super simple avocado toast recipe next time you're in the mood to change up your breakfast! I added in fresh chives and loved the flavor it added. I added in arugula so that I could get a good dose of leafy greens early in the day. You could also throw an egg on top and it would be delicious!

Let's Talk Bedtime Routines

Let's Talk Bedtime Routines

Bedtime routines aren't just reserved for childhood, adults can greatly benefit from them too! We all know that it's important to get sound sleep, but yet it's usually one of the first things we sacrifice when life gets busy. We wonder why even though we thought we got 7 hours of sleep we still feel exhausted. We live for the weekend when we can finally catch up. Sound familiar?

If you think about the childhood bedtime routine you had or the nighttime routine you give to your kiddos it sounds amazing right? A full stomach, a warm bath or shower, a book, sound machine, music, a diffuser with lavender essential oil, etc. And then they sleep for 10 hours and wake up feeling full of energy and ready to tackle the day. Sounds great!

Dairy-Free, Low-Sugar Yogurt Bowl

Dairy-Free, Low-Sugar Yogurt Bowl

Once I became mostly dairy-free I was a little bummed on the yogurt front. I loved yogurt bowls but knew that dairy didn't make me feel my best. I'm so excited that recently quite a few delicious dairy-free yogurt options have come out that aren't soy based. If you follow my Instagram you know yogurt bowls are one of my go-to breakfast options. I'll link to a few of my favorite brands below but they are either based from coconut, cashews or almonds and are delicious!

Now that I had the dairy-free worked out, the next yogurt obstacle is all of the hidden sugar! I was shocked when I started being more aware of sugar levels in processed foods to see how much sugar the even naturally sweetened yogurts had. Sugar can wreak havoc on skin, energy, digestion and so much more that I knew I had to find a better option. Thankfully many of the brands make "unsweetened yogurt" that have no added sugar. The trade off is that the flavor can be very bland so the key is to add lots of delicious but healthy and low-sugar add-ins!
